I see my role
as a nurse educator as an opportunity to share my life, spiritual, and
professional experiences with aspiring nursing students. I have the innate need to seek knowledge and
growth on a continuum which drives me in the direction of education. My life experiences have allowed me to gain
wisdom and knowledge, while my professional experiences have formed knowledge
and skills, and my continued spiritual values and growth have positively
influenced my progress fostering a desire in me to teach.
The discipline of nursing involves the generation and discovery of new knowledge; the teaching, understanding, and development of skills; the application of the knowledge and skills learned; and the integration of the knowledge and skills with critical thinking, all of which is nurtured from a creative educator. Teaching allows me the opportunity to teach students, having them learn from me and I reciprocate by learning from them as well in formation of the teaching-learning process, a unique interpersonal relationship between student and nurse educator. I am able to instill in my students the knowledge and skills I have developed from years of experience, while modeling the passion I have for the profession through my actions. My educational philosophy is teaching, learning, knowledge and skills as explained more in depth as follows.
Nursing students are hungry for knowledge and eager to learn and develop understanding for the concepts they are learning therefore they will gain this knowledge from me by me as I teach them in the clinical setting through use of skills and application from my instruction and by my actions. I will set the example of professionalism for my students in the clinical setting by conducting myself as a professional at all times, expecting the same from them. I will be prepared for clinical having assignments prepared and being readily available for students, as I expect them to be as well for the start of each clinical day. I will be open and ready to listen to students having an objective mind, recognizing each student has their own individual obstacles, and being fair when facing difficult situations, being mindful to keep the students best needs first. Flexibility in relation to assignments and schedules for students when necessary as I identify students who may require some wiggle room, or modification. I will always remember that my approach and teaching skills has room for improvement as the nursing profession advances and changes occur.
My personal growth is on a continuum as I continue to develop the skill set as an educator and grow as an advanced practice nurse. I recognize nursing as a life-long process, and dedicate my time to learning so that I in exchange can continue to provide the most recent knowledge to my students as my nursing philosophy states – teaching, learning, knowledge, and skills.
